Fines for Parking Violations Increased


1/13/03 - The City Commission recently passed an ordinance allowing for an additional surcharge on parking fines in order to fund the school crossing guard program.

Without these additional funds, the crossing guard program would have been in jeopardy. Previously, Monroe County funded the school crossing guard program. Late last year, the City Commission was informed that the County would no longer provide funds for the program.

Florida law allows municipalities to fund school crossing guard programs through the use of surcharges on parking fines. The City Commission decided this would be the best route for continued funding of the crossing guards.

The new fines are as follows:

Prohibited parking is posted with signs, noted in City Ordinances and/or Florida Statutes. The new fines went into effect January 10.
