City Closer to Taking Ownership of Poinciana

1/9/03 - Mayor Jimmy Weekley and City Manager Julio Avael, leading a local delegation, met with Navy officials and the General Services Administration Wednesday to continue negotiations on the purchase price for Poinciana Plaza. "The meeting was very positive," said Mayor Weekley. "They seem to understand the issues facing the city on the price for the property. The city has already invested a substantial sum, including $3.68 million spent on improvements, and will need to make additional investments for sewer laterals."

The Mayor continued, "Key West will be taking ownership of the property. A price has been agreed upon but we are awaiting the final go ahead from senior Navy officials to make the announcement."

Prior to the negotiation, the City worked with Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen on a bill regarding the purchase price. Based on the positive nature of the negotiations yesterday, Mayor Weekley contacted Washington to request that the proposed legislation be withdrawn.
