Alexandra Almeda Appointed to Youth Advisory Board

2/6/03 Key West – At the City Commission meeting February 4, Junior Alexandra Almeda was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Youth Advisory Board.

A National Honor Society member, Beta Club member and Cheerleader, Almeda sees the opportunity to serve on the board as, “an honor . . .to be part of such an important group.  It is important to me to make my high school years as productive as possible.”  Almeda continued, “I enjoy being active in numerous organizations and helping out in the community.”

The Board consists of seven Key West High School students appointed by the City Commission.  Each Commissioner is allowed to nominate one representative from their district, with a member-at-large appointed by the Mayor.  Students are of different grade levels to ensure some continuity from one year to the next.  The goal of the Youth Advisory Board is to provide recommendations to the Commission that will positively impact the life of local youth.

The Board formed their mission statement to frame their objectives:

We are a board of young students who were formed to create a stronger voice for the youth of the Florida Keys.  We will strive to work with the Commissioners to create a better community for current residents and those to come.

The Youth Advisory Board meets each Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Old City Hall.
