It's the time of year when local firefighters can be seen around town, holding out their empty boots, asking the community for donations to help fight muscular dystrophy. In tribute to their dedicated effort to the Fill the Boot campaign, Key West Mayor Craig Cates proclaimed September Firefighter Appreciation Month.

The community is invited to participate in an eye-opening open house on Saturday, Sept. 11th. The Keys Overnight Temporary Shelter – or KOTS – is hosting the event to show the community how this important service works. Doors will be open from 1:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.
