Open 24 hrs a day 7 days/week. All call after 7:00 AM will be scheduled for the following working day.

For example:

If you call in at 5:30 PM on Monday, your inspection will be scheduled for Tuesday.

If you call in at 6:45 AM on Tuesday, your inspection will be scheduled for Tuesday.

Permits...Why? When?

Building Permit- A building permit is required prior to any work or construction of any kind, permanent or temporary, that has a value greater than $500.00 including materials and labor. Building permits are also required for any "structural" repairs or changes no matter what the cost.

Electrical Permit - An electrical permit is required anytime work is preformed on the existing electrical system, or for any new wiring taking place.

Building Permit Submittal Packages

Certain specific items need to be included at the time of submitting for a Building Permit in order to be considered a complete Building Permit Submittal Package. All incomplete packages will not be accepted and put in for review. Please review your package before bringing it to the Building Department for completeness as this will help speed up the process.

Required inspections shall be called in a specific order. These inspections must be approved by the City to complete the building process and secure a Certificate of Occupancy. All jobs may not require every inspection.

Occupational License and Business Permits

An occupational license is required for any business located in Key West, and for certain businesses located outside city limits but conducting business within the City. The City of Key West permits certain business to operate from a residential property (home occupations). These are regulated by a land-use ordinance and require a special application. Occupational license applications can be obtained and submitted at the Occupational Licensing counter located in the Building Department at 604 Simonton Street, Key West. All applications for new licenses are reviewed within 48 hours.
