Although Mr. Jones most recently returned to our Island City in 1993, he has deep roots here. His mother, Ruth, was married to Sammy Higgs, who was the brother of former Monroe County Commissioner Clarence Higgs. He attended grades 8 and 9 at Key West High School beginning in 1944, and returned to Key West in 1953, where he served in Squadron HS-1 at the USN Key West Seaplane Base until 1955. He returned to Alabama Polytechnic Institute {Auburn University} and graduated in 1957.

Married for nearly 50 years to Ruth Gibson of Key West, the couple has two children, Donna and Philip, and one grandson, Jason.

Never forgetting his commitment to our community, Mr. Jones is currently active in many civic organizations. They include the IEEE, the Society of American Military Engineers, YMCA (serving as Director), Key West Maritime Historical Society (serving as Director), and the Key West Rotary Club, where he was on the Board of Directors and now serves as the Chairman of the Environmental Committee.
