Storm surge is a dome-like rise in ocean level associated with a Hurricane.  It is highest along and to the immediate right of where the eye of the hurricane strikes land.  Solares Hill, at 15 feet above sea level, is the highest point in Key West.  Storm surge in a Category 5 Hurricane can be higher than 16 feet, with waves breaking on the surface, adding to its height.

Water kills more people than wind.  This is one reason evacuation is mandatory when a Category 3, 4 or 5 Hurricane threatens our area.  It is especially important to be prepared to evacuate on short notice because Hurricanes can increase in strength very quickly.

This Hurricane Preparedness tip brought to you by Key West Emergency Management.
