The Key West Fire Department has
a long tradition dating back to 1834 when the first volunteer fire department
was organized. Things changed after the great fire of 1886 when 2/3 of the
business district was destroyed. The City of Key West learned a valuable lesson.
The city bought two horse drawn steamers and the county one. Two more fire
stations were added and the city and county began to pay drivers and engineers.
That was the beginning of a professional fire department in Key West. The Key
West Fire Department has developed into one of the finest fire departments in
the State of Florida with a ISO Insurance Rating of 3.
