West Police Officers Are Now Available To Check Installation Of
Child Safety Seats
Officers will check child safety seats by
appointment on Tuesdays through Fridays. Interested persons may call
293-8364 to make an appointment. An officer will meet with the adult at
either the fire station on North Roosevelt Boulevard or the police station
on Angela Street.
Ninety percent of child safety seats are incorrectly installed in
automobiles. "This lifesaving device is completely useless if it
isn't installed right," said Sgt. Ed Stress, head of the Key West
Police Department's Traffic Safety Division.
"Anyone who has installed one of these knows it's pretty
complicated," Stress said. "The odds are high that a
well-meaning parent could make a mistake - a potentially fatal
mistake." The seats, used correctly, reduce the risk of death in an
accident by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers, Stress
"That's why we want to make this vital public service as convenient
as possible." Stress said.
His officers have undergone extensive technical training on proper
installation of the various brands of child safety seats and are certified
in the techniques by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
and the American Automobile Association.
