Mayor Urges Residents to Shop Locally

Key West Mayor Jimmy Weekley would like to encourage residents to patronize local merchants during this time of economic uncertainty.

“September is traditionally a slow month for our businesses,” said Mayor Weekley. “And a sudden drop in tourism could have a significantly negative impact on our local economy.”

Locals are encouraged to support Key West stores, restaurants, and services rather than shopping in the mainland or over the Internet at this time.  The fact that many of our businesses are small, family owned establishments could make them less resilient in an economic downturn.

“Our island has always been able to pull together when we most need it,” said Mayor Weekley. “By helping each other we can try to improve the economic climate for all.”
