Police Traffic Safety Division Receives A State Award

A year of relentlessly hammering away in the community with the car safety belt and child car safety seat message won Key West Police Sgt. Ed Stress and his Traffic Safety Division a state award, Key West Police Patrol Division Capt. Bill Fortune has announced.

The Florida Department of Transportation and Buckle Up Florida selected Stress over nominations from throughout the state as first-place winner in this year’s Occupant Protection Safety Awards.   Fortune submitted the nomination.

An example of their efforts was seen in the February safety campaign, one of several the Key West police division ran throughout the year, Fortune said.  Stress’ officers, plus firefighters and volunteers, inspected the most child car safety seats in the state.

“I want to thank all the officers in the division for their enthusiasm and determination to get Key Westers of all ages to buckle up,” Stress said.  “That – not writing tickets – was our goal.”  He also thanked the local news media for helping to promote the safety campaigns.
