KWFD completes state training

The Key West fire department recently completed the second of five training sessions designed to prepare its “Search and Rescue Team” to function as part of the State of Florida Urban Search and Rescue System. With the support of City Manager Julio Avael, left, the department was able to join the program and advance through the training process. The State of Florida is providing the training for this effort to two teams per county throughout the state at no cost. The curriculum is designed and delivered to allow teams from any jurisdiction to integrate seamlessly with any other teams when called upon to respond to a major incident. By participating in this program the department is slated to receive additional rescue equipment at no cost to the city. Perhaps most importantly, the training and skills acquired can be applied to the department’s everyday responses in Key West. These include vehicle extrication, rope rescue, confined space, trench rescue and building collapse.
