Key West man critical after scooter crash

A Key West man was flown to a Miami hospital Thursday afternoon in critical condition Thursday after a crash in which he was thrown from a rental scooter he was driving and hit a tree.

At about 1:40 p.m., Andrew Davies, 41, of Key West, entered the intersection of Caroline and Simonton streets going straight on Caroline Street when a car coming from the opposite direction reportedly turned left in front of the scooter. The scooter hit it, and Davies flew about four feet above the ground before hitting a tree.

He suffered head injuries. After being treated at the scene and taken to the local hospital, Davies was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Unit in Miami. A witness and crash scene investigation by Key West Police Traffic Safety Officer Randall Hartle confirmed the circumstances of the crash.

The driver of the car, Susan Karen, 52, of Sugarloaf Key, was cited for violation of right of way.
