The annual Crime Stoppers of the Keys Fourth of July 5K Run/Walk starts at 7:30 a.m. at Smathers Beach, across from the Sheraton Resort Hotel on South Roosevelt Boulevard. It features a flat race course along the Atlantic Ocean. The certified course makes for a beautiful run or walk with graceful palm trees flanking one side of the route and the ocean on the other side.
Pre-registration for the race is $20. Pre-race registration is Saturday, July 3, at the Sheraton Resort’s restaurant from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Registered runners and walkers can also pick up their race packets at that time. Registration the day of the race is $25. For more information or registration forms, call the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 305-292-7116 or 1-800-273-COPS. Registration forms are also available at the Key West Police Department, local health clubs and other businesses.
The event is the sole fund-raiser for the non-profit organization that funds a toll-free hotline for tipsters who receive cash rewards if their information results in arrests. All proceeds from the race benefit the reward fund. Every entry is eligible for great prize drawings, including airline tickets, rental cars and vacation stays. Trophies and medallions will be awarded to the first and second place winners in the various runners and walkers categories.
Crime Stoppers tips have helped local law enforcement with 257 arrests, 305 felony cases and recovery or seizure of over $292,000 in drugs, cash and stolen property.
