When the order to evacuate the Lower Keys comes, be ready to leave immediately. There are no second chances. Adverse weather associated with hurricanes and tropical storms occurs well in advance of the center or eye. Tropical storm winds, high tides, and torrential rains occur hours before the winds reach hurricane force. Our roads to the mainland will probably be flooded well before winds reach hurricane force. So have at the ready everything you will be taking with you and keep the carís gas tank at least half full at all times.
