Credit union employee allegedly takes $6,000

A Key West police detective arrested a credit union employee for allegedly taking $6,000 from the bank’s vault Monday and Tuesday.

She reportedly had taken the money to give to her boyfriend to buy crack cocaine, Detective Pablo Rodriguez said. Rodriguez first investigated Holly Lynn Spettel’s claim that she accidentally gave a customer $10,000 in error for a $5,000 withdrawal. He talked to the customer, who provided a copy of his transaction slip and a full explanation that he had not received extra money.

Continuing the investigation, Rodriguez reportedly found that Spettel had taken $1,000 out of her drawer on Monday which she put in her bra to take out of the bank. On Tuesday, she took $5,000 from the vault, which she put in her purse and took out to her car, Rodriguez said. At the time of her arrest, Spettel confessed to the crime. Rodriguez charged the 19-year-old Key West woman Thursday for grand theft and for theft.

On Friday, Rodriguez arrested the boyfriend, Jonathan James Ruhnke, 23, for grand theft for spending money he reportedly knew was stolen.
